Renting a Porta Potty in a Connecticut Winter
January nights in Bridgeport drop into the 20s, and job sites don't stop. Here's how to keep a portable toilet working through freezes, snow and plows.
Do porta potty tanks freeze?
Yes, a plain tank can freeze in a hard cold snap. In winter we add a salt brine to the tank so it stays liquid and keeps working, and the weekly service tops it up.
What about sinks and flushing units?
Fresh-water lines in deluxe units and wash stations can freeze. In deep cold we swap them for standard units with hand sanitizer.
Where should it go in snow?
Out of the plow path, close to a cleared walkway, and where the service truck can still get within about 15 feet. Shovel the path to the door — the driver needs it too.
What about Nor'easters on the shoreline?
On exposed lots in Black Rock or along the Sound, ask us to stake the unit. If a storm surge is forecast, move monthly units off low ground or call us to relocate.

Related questions
Can you anchor it so it doesn't blow over? Our lot gets a lot of wind.
Yes. On exposed sites, including shoreline lots in Black Rock and the South End, we can stake or strap the unit. Mention wind when you book.
Can it stay in the parking lot all week?
If the property manager agrees, yes. Keep it out of the plow path in winter and away from fire lanes.
